Dr. Luzod sees infants as young as 3-weeks, because even the normal birth process can cause damage to the spine. In a normal delivery, a doctor exerts and average of 30-40lbs of force on the neonates skull and neck. Which is equivalent to an adult lying on the floor, and being lifted up by their head! And of course if you've witnessed a delivery, it's not simply a straight pull and the baby comes out. The process involves twisting and torquing of a very elastic and shapeable infant spine. During his studies, Dr. Luzod placed special emphasis on the care of the pregnant mother. Even though previous pregnancies may have been pain-free, multiparous women can experience extreme low back and leg pain at any time. In particular, as the mother heads into her third trimester, she will release a hormone known as Relaxin. This allows the ligaments of the birth canal to expand, as well as the surrounding structures to shift, which can also exacerbate the pain, and make the spine more unstable. Because the NUCCA Correction is classified as low-force chiropractic, Dr. Luzod is able to treat with an extremely gentle pressure, and there are no contra-indications to the adjustment (except in cases of major traumatic fracture, cancer and spinal infections). Any x-rays are ONLY from the neck up, so there is no exposure to the fetus. And of course pregnant patients still receive proper lead vest shielding just as a precautionary measure. And finally, the NUCCA x-rays utilize lead filters placed over the x-ray tube, which furthermore reduce exposure, making these films safer than standard hospital films. Generally, children under the age of 4 years need only 1-2 films.
